Speak Your Mind: The Art, Stories and Cultures of Arab and Muslim Women
Call for Visual Artists (Deadline April 1, 2011)
Who:
Empowered Women International (EWI) is issuing a call for Muslim and Arab women artists in the Greater Washington DC Metro Area (Maryland, Virginia and District of Columbia) and working in all media for an exhibit entitled: “Speak Your Mind: The Art, Stories and Cultures of Arab and Muslim Women.”
The exhibition is part of the We the People Project 2011, Empowered Women International’s annual arts presentation and outreach project. The project documents through art the immigrant and refugee women’s experience, explores issues of integration and identity, and preserves and celebrates traditions, art and stories that build dialogue, respect and multicultural understanding about our global community.
What:
Paintings, photographs, sculptural work and art installations by Muslim or Arab women or by artists depicting the lives, stories and cultures of Muslim and Arab women. All artwork must be properly wired and ready to hang. Unframed works should have neatly finished edges.
Where:
The exhibit will take place at the Galleries of Takoma Park Community Center, June 1-June 25, 2011. A day long series of art demonstrations and events will take place on June 11, from 10:30 am-4pm followed by a reception for the artists from 5-7:30 pm.
How:
Please send lo-res jpeg images or a website URL to the curator, Tom Block, at thomasablock@gmail.com by April 1. All decisions of included work will be made by May 1, 2011.
Notification:
Artists selected to exhibit will be notified no later than May 1, 2011. Drop off of artwork and installation is scheduled on May 28th. The artwork will be picked up by the artist on June 25th. Instructions for delivery of work and pick up dates will also be included in notification.
Artwork is to be for sale at prices established by the artist. Artist will retain 50 percent of all sales; 50 percent will benefit EWI and its multicultural arts and entrepreneurial programs for immigrant and refugee women.
There is no fee to enter; however, there will be a $35 fee for non-members of EWI who are accepted into the show. This fee will include a one-year membership in EWI.
This project has been made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Partners include Takoma Park Arts and Humanities Commission (TPAHC), Pyramid Atlantic and Takoma Park Recreation Department.
