We are so proud of EWI alumnae Sushmita Mazumdar and her Studio Pause’s presenting Thou Art: The Beauty of Identity.

Arlington, VA – Studio Pause presents Thou Art: The Beauty of Identity, a poetry anthology capturing the diverse community of the Washington DC Metro region. The project is a collaboration between Studio Pause owner and artist Sushmita Mazumdar and Afghan artist Sughra Hussainy. Mazumdar worked with 25 local writers to create a rich collection of identity poems spanning multiple generations, racial/ethnic backgrounds, religions, and language speakers. Hussainy brings each voice to life by adorning each poem with a unique piece of traditional Afghan painting. Thou Art also contains a series of public programs, including a school-based project titled “We Are” with Oakridge Elementary, beginning on April 4 and continuing throughout National Poetry Month.

img_0862The collaboration between Mazumdar and Hussainy began at the Smithsonian’s Freer Sackler Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., where Hussainy’s art is on display in the exhibit Turquoise Mountain: Artists Transforming Afghanistan. Mazumdar, a Freer & Sackler Gallery docent, invited Hussainy to her Arlington studio where the pair connected with other artists and students around experiences of stereotypes. From there, Mazumdar began inviting members of the community to meet Hussainy and write their own poems about identity – first timers and pros, students and retirees, artists and lawyers. Mazumdar says about the project, “Thou Art hopes people can accept others for who they are – which is so much more than we can ever imagine.” Hussainy hopes to use her art to break down stereotypes about Afghanistan and pay homage to her native country: “Making art is a link for me with my past – with my family and with those who went before me.” To read more about the process of creating Thou Art, visit the Freer Sackler blog
