At the beginning of January, Empowered Women International welcomed our newest team member, Sarah Bodley, as our new Operations Manager. We are thrilled to have her on board to share her passion, vision, and talents with the EWI community. She took a moment to reflect on her experience thus far and share a little about herself. Her full bio is available on our Who We Are page. Welcome, Sarah!

I’ve been at EWI just over four weeks, and it has been a complete whirlwind so far: full of passion, challenging, lovely, and often hectic. My transition here was a big one—after ten years in arts administration, I moved from NYC in January (after a brief stopover in my hometown in Connecticut) to step into EWI’s Operations Manager position.

Years ago, I stumbled into the arts administration world as a dancer. As so many starving artists do, I sought out a day job that would support my artistic goals. A few years ago between a bike tour in rural Nova Scotia and a road trip, I began to realize that though the arts remain a powerful force in my life, I wanted to do something that could have a different kind of impact. I decided to return to graduate school to pursue an MBA in Sustainability from Bard College. The program opened my eyes to a world of possibilities, particularly regarding the power of local economies and individuals to make change for themselves, their communities, and the planet.

Now just a few weeks into this new adventure, the cover letter I submitted for the position just a couple of months ago still rings true:

“I believe fervently in the power of business to affect change, yet am often dismayed by the systemic barriers to entrepreneurship that can keep local communities from thriving. I am drawn to Empowered Women International because it provides essential resources and skills to individuals who not only have something extraordinary to offer as entrepreneurs, but who often understand better than anyone the needs of their own communities and can become powerful change agents.

I have both a passion for sustainable business and an unwavering belief in the ability of people to affect change, especially when given the tools and opportunity to do so.”

It is an honor to have joined the amazing team at EWI, and I am thrilled to be embarking on this new chapter of my own life, in support of a mission in which I truly believe.
